In the Bubble
Joe Popp (along with Michael Friedman) is one of the composers for the new musical by
Rinne Groff titled
In the Bubble loosely based on the 70's John Travolta
TV movie. The show is part of
the American Music Theatre Project and is scheduled
for production at the Northwestern University's Evanston campus in late July 2007 at the Ethel M. Barber Theatre.
Michael Greif (Rent, Grey Gardens ) will direct and
Oskar Eustis,
artistic director of the Public Theatre in New York, will do dramaturgy on the show.
The Public Theatre is involved as a future presenting theater.
Press Release:
"In the Bubble" tells the tale of Todd Fielding, a fictional character suffering from the real disease of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), which has kept him stuck behind a plastic wall and separated from human touch for the first 17 years of his life. When Todd falls in love with the wealthy and high-spirited Gina Jenner, who lives next door, he is forced to choose between his safe existence in "bubbled" captivity and a risky chance at the life he's always wanted.
The new musical is based on the book by Rinne Groff
and music by
Michael
Friedman and Joe Popp with lyrics by all three."
